Good news for Rye (Rye) whiskey aficionados in Turkey! WhistlePig, one of America's most popular premium Rye (Rye) whiskey brands, is in Turkey!

The Turkey launch of the brand was held at Rusty Fork with a great event. As a staunch Rye whiskey lover, I am very happy that I did not miss this launch, which coincided with the time I came to Turkey from London for a short time. Before I move on to my notes from the launch, I would like to briefly give you information about the brand.

WhistlePig, which was founded in 2007 by Dave Pickerell, the former chief distiller of Maker's Mark, and entrepreneur Raj Peter Bhakta, is a brand that has made a name for itself with the awards it has collected in recent years. One of the leading brands in the Rye category, WhistlePig also has a motto like “The most decorated Rye Whiskey in the world”. It is a little difficult to translate this motto directly into Turkish, but I can briefly explain it as follows: A brand decorated/decorated and crowned with these trophies due to the awards it has received...

When we look at the production process of WhistlePig, we come across details that we do not see very often in other brands. Established in 2007, WhistlePig began distilling at the brand's Vermont production facility (or more accurately, farm) in 2015. In addition to the brand's production in Vermont, it uses another production facility called Alberta Distillers Limited in Canada, and also has a large stock of aged whiskey in Canada. Whiskeys produced in Canada come to Vermont where aging/finishing and bottling is done.

WhistlePig entered the Turkish market with the 3 expression.

  • WhistlePig Small Batch Rye 10
  • WhistlePig 12 Old World Rye
  • WhistlePig 15 Estate Oak Rye

I will write down my tasting notes for each whiskey in detail, but very briefly here I would like to share a few pills and my first impressions with you.

WhistlePig Small Batch Rye 10: The standard expression of the brand, matured for 10 years in new oak barrels and bottled at 50% grade. Distinctive rye, cinnamon, caramel, anise and wood scents on the nose. The rye character is quite evident on the palate. Plenty of spices, cinnamon, cloves and oak flavors are accompanied by caramel, vanilla, honey and light fruit. It has a syrupy and liquor-like structure. A medium-long, warm, dry finish.

WhistlePig 12 Old World Rye: An interesting whiskey produced by blending rye whiskeys matured in new oak barrels for 12 years in 63% Madeira, 30% Sauternes and 7% ratios after being finished in Port barrels for about 2 months and bottling with 43% grade. On the nose, caramel, vanilla, grape and chocolate scents are accompanied by burnt oak and rye. It is quite full on the palate, complex and easy to drink. It has a nice harmony of sweet and spicy aromas. Red berries, cinnamon, honey, bitters, oak and pepper. The finish is sweet-spicy.

WhistlePig 15 Estate Oak Rye: It is a 46% grade bottling, which is finished for 8 months in barrels made of special oaks grown in the region called “Vermont Estate Oak” after being matured in new oaks for 15 years. On the nose, elegant fruity scents accompany the scents of rye, caramel, clove, wet oak and old cheddar. It has a surprisingly spicy and hot start on the palate. With the aeration of the glass, the elegant sweet aromas in the nose become evident. Oak character is intense. In the finish long hot and dry.

In general, I can say that they are quite complex whiskeys for all three WhistlePig expressions. I look forward to tasting it side by side with different whiskeys to refresh my tasting notes. As someone who loves rye whiskeys, I am really happy that these whiskeys have entered our country.

If I have to talk very briefly about the launch night, the American and BBQ theme of the place is very compatible with the brand. Especially the music list with more country songs was really good. A small cocktail menu was created for the event, which includes Rye Ball, Vermount Mule and Old Fashioned cocktails. Those of you who follow my articles have guessed that my preference is Old Fashioned. 🙂 Old Fashioned made with WhistlePig 10 is really delicious. The cocktails were accompanied by Rusty Fork's excellent BBQ flavors. Arguably the most enjoyable part of the event was the vertical tasting with UK Brand Ambassador Daniel Priseman.
