Oban Distillers Edition, the standard expression of the distillery Oban 14It is produced by aging (finish) for 6 to 18 months in Montilla Fino sherry barrels.
The expressions of this series, which are released every year by many distilleries under Diageo, reveal whiskeys with different characters in different years. For this reason, the year it was distilled and bottled is indicated on the bottles in the series. The expression I tasted was distilled in 2003 and bottled in 2017.
Distillers Edition Series: A series of Diageo in which the standard expressions of distilleries such as Lagavulin, Talisker, Caol Ila, Dalwhinnie are further matured by placing them in different barrels (Amoroso, Pedro Ximenez, Port…).
Oban Distillers Edition 2017 (Scottish Single Malt, 43% abv)
Nose: Intense fruity aromas such as apple, peach, pear and orange are accompanied by honey and almonds. Smells such as grass and straw, which are intensely present in Oban 14, are also present here. Very little soot and iodine.
Palate: It is much stronger on the palate compared to the nose. Intense sherry character is added to fruit and honey aromas, oak and very slightly spicy aromas. I also tasted very light sooty and salty flavors. It has a dry and full character.
Finish: Medium length, fruity, slightly spicy and salty finish.
Comment: I can briefly say that Oban Distillers Edition 2003 is a sweeter and drier whiskey compared to the distillery's 14-year standard expression. In this bottling, where fruit and sherry characters are dominant, we see that soot and salty flavors are a little more in the background. I can say that Oban 14's is-salt-fruit balance searched a little in this expression…
