WhistlePig Straight Rye 10 is the expression of the WhistlePig distillery in Vermont, USA, distilled from 100% rye and bottled with 50% abv. WhistlePig was founded in 2007 by Dave Pickerell, former chief distiller of Maker's Mark, and entrepreneur Raj Peter Bhakta. Established on a land that used to be a rye farm, WhistlePig positions itself as a farm distillery with the motto of "farm-to-bottle".
Distillation at the WhistlePig farm begins in 2015. During this time, the brand uses its other facility in Canada (Alberta Distillers Limited). However, let me also point out that the brand has casks stock that it bought in Canada at the time of its establishment to bottle.
After being distilled and aged in Canada, WhistlePig Straight Rye 10 arrives at the WhistlePig farm and is bottled after a final maturation.
The WhistlePig brand was launched in Turkey as of June 2022. You may check my notes from the the launch event from this link .
WhistlePig Straight Rye 10 (Rye, 50% abv)
Nose: Rye, caramel, anise and wood notes. The rye character is quite strong. Fresh, sweet and spicy. After few swirls, sweet notes emerge a little more.
Palate: As on the nose, the rye character is quite evident on the palate. Plenty of spices, cinnamon, cloves and oak flavors are followed by caramel, vanilla, honey and hints of fruit. It has a syrupy and liquor-like structure.
Finish: A medium-long, warm and dry finish
Overall: The standard bottling of the brand, WhistlePig Straight Rye 10, is truly a Rye whiskey. As expected from a Rye whiskey, the spice flavors are very strong. In addition to drinking it straight, I think it will be very enjoyable with a few drops of water or a big ice, thanks to the 50% abv level.
