İskoçya’nın Islay bölgesinde bulunan Bruichladdich damıtımevinin Octomore serisi, yoğun turbalı viski sevenleri fazlasıyla heyecanlandıran iddialı bir seri. İlk kez 2008 yılında piyasaya çıkan Octomore, meşe fıçılarda beş yıl olgunlaştırılıyor. Her ekspresyon farklı fıçı detaylarına ve alkol derecelerine sahip olsa da serinin ortak noktası, olağanüstü yoğun turba karakteri.

Octomore’un 15 serisi 2024 yılında piyasaya sürülmüş olmasına rağmen tadım notlarımı yeni kaleme alma fırsatı buldum. Serinin 16. edisyonunun yolda olduğu bu günlerde, Octomore 15 serisinin ilk üyesi için notlarımı paylaşmak istedim.

Serinin ilk üyesi Octomore 15.1, 5 yıl süreyle ilk dolum ve yeniden yakılmış (re-charred) ex-bourbon fıçılarında olgunlaştırıldıktan sonra %59,1 alkol derecesiyle şişelenmiş. Bu ekspresyonun üretiminde 108.2. PPM’e sahip yoğun turba ateşinde kurutulmuş İskoç arpası kullanılmış.

Octomore Edition 15.1 – 5 Year Old Scottish Barley Bourbon Cask (Single Malt Scotch, %59.1 abv)

Burun: Vanilya, karamel ve narenciye belirgin. Topraksı ve kavruk turba dumanı kendini hemen hissettiriyor. Hafif anason, malt, zencefil, ıslak kek ve tropik meyve kokularıyla zengin.

Damak: İlk yudumda turba yoğunluğu geliyor, ama bunu hemen tatlılık ve canlı meyvemsilik dengeliyor. Mango, muz ve kayısı reçeli gibi tropikal nüanslara karabiber, bitter, kahve ve hafif deniz esintisiyle birleşen is eşlik ediyor.

Bitiş: Uzun, sıcak ve tatmin edici. Turba, vanilya ve hafif yanık meşe, karamel.

Genel Yorumlarım: Octomore 15.1, yüksek turba seviyesine rağmen oldukça dengeli. Turba karakteriyle tropik meyve ve fıçılardan gelen vanilya ve karamel tatlılığı oldukça kompleks bir deneyim sunuyor.

The Octomore series from Bruichladdich Distillery, located on Scotland’s Islay, has always excited peat enthusiasts with its bold character. First released in 2008, Octomore whiskies are matured for five years in oak casks. While each expression showcases different cask details and ABV levels, they all share one common ground – an extraordinarily high peat intensity.

Although the 15 series was launched in 2024, I only recently had the chance to sit down and write my tasting notes. With the upcoming release of the 16 series, it feels like the right time to revisit Octomore 15 and share my impressions.

Matured for five years in first-fill and re-charred ex-bourbon casks, this whisky was bottled at a robust 59.1% ABV, representing a peat intensity of 108.2 PPM.

Octomore 15.1 (Single Malt Scotch, 59.1% abv, 108.2 PPM)

Nose: Vanilla, caramel and citrus come forward, wrapped in earthy, roasted peat smoke. Hints of anise, malt, ginger, tropical fruits and moist cake add further depth.

Palate: The initial hit of peat is quickly balanced by sweetness and vibrant fruitiness. Tropical notes of mango, banana and apricot jam blend with peppery spice, bitter, coffee undertones and a subtle maritime smokiness.

Finish: Long, warm and satisfying. Layers of peat smoke, vanilla, toasted oak and caramel linger gracefully.

Overall Impressions: Despite its high peat level, Octomore 15.1 is remarkably balanced. The interplay of smoke, tropical fruit and bourbon cask sweetness creates a complex and compelling dram.
